If you’re after twinkly views of Darling Harbour and a modern whirl on Chinese food, you’ve come to the right place.
With a sophisticated, swanky and modern vibe, this 200-seater lunch-dinner restaurant feels right at home in the Sydney waterfront restaurant precinct that is King Street Wharf.
An offshoot of the Crows Nest restaurant Bistro Hulu, Hulu at King Street Wharf opened in early 2018 and is fast winning fans, putting a new spin on old favourites. There’s a hint of French, a splash of Japanese and just the right amount of quirk.
And like most Chinese restaurants, the extent of the menu will blow your mind. There’s over 80 choices, covering everything from starters and dim sum to poultry, seafood, red meat and dessert. This is a sizeable problem for someone who struggles to decide what to put on their toast in the morning.
A study in modern Chinese fusion dining
Not wedded to any one area of China, Hulu at King Street Wharf’s menu has influences from all over. Plus, lots of grand things like mud crab, lobster and Jasmine tea-smoked duck.
Now getting back to that mention of quirk. Hulu at King Street Wharf certainly marches to the beat of its own drum, not afraid to serve up dumplings modelled on everyone’s favourite clown fish: Nemo. The sweet and sour pork comes on a bed of shaved ice, while the pear-shaped cheesy prawn dumplings will make you do a double-take.
Probably no surprises, but my favourite part of the dining experience at Hulu was the dessert – more specifically the deep-fried ice cream dessert. The hot Nutella sauce is poured over a dark chocolate dome, which collapses to reveal a perfect ball of deep fried ice cream. I appreciated the food theatre and it tasted bloody delicious. So full from the mains, Jude and I said we’d only have one bite of dessert – we ended up fighting one another for the last bite.
Hulu at King Street Wharf is…
In this pocket of the Sydney CBD that can feel a little soulless, Hulu at King Street Wharf welcomes you with a big hug – well, not literally a hug. But the crew are ultra friendly, the service is on-point and the feed is a good one.
Final tip: if it’s a sunny/balmy day/night, try and jag a table out on the balcony for some million-dollar harbour views. And do order the deep fried ice cream!
